When construction of the Taiwanese skyscraper called Taipei 101 is completed in 2004, it will become the world's tallest skyscraper, but only for three years. On the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai World Financial Center is now under construction, and will be bigger than Taipei 101 when completed in 2007.

Tapiei 101 will stand 508 meters tall at a cost of 1.67 billion US dollars, and will have the fastest lift in the world. The elevator will take just 35 seconds to get to the top. The building will stand more than 50 meters taller than the world's current highest building, the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.
