Colombian Peace Commissioner Meets Rebel ELN in Cuba
WED, FEB 27, 2002
Colombia's government peace commissioner, Camilo Gomez, met with representatives of the Rebel National Liberation Army (ELN), in Cuba on Monday, in preparation for the peace talks between the government and the rebel group, the Colombian government said on Tuesday.

Gomez' trip to the Cuban capital, Havana, was aimed at taking substantial steps to encourage the peace negotiations between the government of President Andres Pastrana and the second largest guerrilla group in Colombia, the government said.

In Havana, Gomez and ELN delegates have prepared for a series of forums scheduled for this weekend over the peace process in Colombia, the government said. Cuba would be likely to host one of these thematic forums.

Cuba has reiterated on different occasions that it will not interfere in Colombia's internal affairs. But it is willing to offer its territory as a place for peace talks to facilitate contacts between the Colombian government and the ELN rebels, in a bid to put an end to the 38-year civil war in Colombia.

After the Colombian government suspended its three-year peace negotiations with the country's largest rebel group FARC, at the height of terrorist attacks blamed on FARC rebels, Pastrana said last week that the government would pursue its talks with the ELN which have been taking place in Havana.

Showing its willingness to continue the negotiations with the government, the ELN last Thursday called on the government led by Pastrana and the FARC to return to peace talks.
