Argentine Military Refutes Reports of Preparations Against Turmoil
WED, FEB 27, 2002
Argentine Defense Minister Horacio Jaunarena dismissed on Tuesday recent press reports that the armed forces were making preparations against any possible social turmoil.

Jaunarena said the rumors were produced by "those who want to create an atmosphere of uncertainty" for certain purposes.

The armed forces would only intervene in a secondary role, in case of an internal conflict, in accordance with the Interior Security Law, he added.

The local newspaper Pagina 12 said last Sunday the Army chief, Gen. Ricardo Brinzoni, during a meeting last week with financial businessman Adrian Werthein, talked of the military's preparations against possible social unrest.

Street demonstrations have been frequent in Argentina since last December as a result of the country's worsening economic and social crisis.
