Italian, Polish Presidents Call for Palestinian-Israeli Truce
WED, FEB 27, 2002
Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski on Tuesday issued a joint appeal for an immediate cease-fire between Palestinians and Israelis.

The call, issued at the end of a meeting at the Italian presidential palace Quirinale, said the two sides must return to the negotiating table "before it is too late."

The two presidents also urged the international community to launch a truly "innovative political initiative" to end the 17-month-old Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Kwasniewski arrived in Rome Tuesday for a three-day official visit expected to focus on bilateral issues and Poland's bid to join the European Union.

The Polish head of state told reporters here he hoped Poland's entry process would be finalized before 2004.
