Hong Kong Exports Remain Sluggish in January
WED, FEB 27, 2002
According to the external merchandise trade figures released Tuesday by the Census and Statistics Department, the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods both fell in January 2002 over a year earlier.

A Government Secretariat spokesman noted that the performance of merchandise exports remained sluggish in January 2002, against the global demand being still weak. Exports to the United States and Europe continued to fall markedly. Yet exports to some of the major markets in East Asia had improved somewhat.

The spokesman pointed out that retained imports of goods improved somewhat in January 2002, ahead of the higher local demand toward the Lunar New Year.

In January 2002, the value of total exports of goods (comprising re-exports and domestic exports) decreased by 12.2 percent over a year earlier, after a 10.4-percent decline in December 2001.

Within this total, the value of re-exports dropped by 11.4 percent, and the value of domestic exports by 19.4 percent. Meanwhile concurrently, the value of imports of goods decreased by 8.6 percent over a year earlier in January 2002, following a 13.5-percent fall in December 2001.
