Thai Exporters Urged Not to Ignore Cambodia
MON, FEB 25, 2002
Local exporters should not ignore Cambodia as the country could become potential export destination because of its higher demand for Thai products, according to a report of the Thai News Agency(TNA) Monday.

Boonyarith Kalayanamitr, the Export Promotion department's counselor (commercial) in Cambodia, was quoted as saying that the overall picture of Thai exports to the country had improved in the past five years.

Many goods, including cement, construction materials, seasoning powder, milk, plastics, chemical products and cosmetics, are in higher demand among Cambodian consumers.

Cambodia's imports valued at more than 1.5 billion U.S.dollars last year. Of this, over 450 million U.S. dollars came from Thailand. It is expected the imports from Thailand would grow by 10 percent to exceed 500 million U.S.dollars this year.

The average demand for each item of Thai products among Cambodian people is as high as 70 percent, indicating the goods are more acceptable than those of other countries, Boonyarith noted.

He said Thai exporters should not be worried too much about problems in the country, particularly on political instability, corruption, inefficient customs procedure, fraud, and poor transportation and communication because many had been already solved.

Boonyarith conceded purchasing power among Cambodian people remains low because it is a developing country. As a result, should Thailand be able to export used products and equipment withgood conditions, such as farm machinery and automobiles and parts,it is believed the Thai export value would annually increase, he said.
