Jordanian King, Powell Discuss Mideast Situation Over Phone
MON, FEB 25, 2002
Jordanian King Abdullah Bin Hussein on Sunday received a phone call from U.S. Secretary of State Collin Powell and the two exchanged views on the latest developments of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis.

During the telephone conversation, King Abdullah stressed the urgent need to exert further efforts to put an immediate end to the current spiral of violence to pave the way for bringing the two sides back to the negotiating table, Jordan's official Petra news agency reported, without further elaborating.

Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994 as the second Arab country, after Egypt, to take such a move, and it stands for a just, durable and comprehensive peace in the region.

Recently, the Jordanian king has been using all possible diplomatic occasions to call for an end to the 17 months of Israeli-Palestinian bloodshed, which has left over 1,200 people dead, mostly Palestinians.
