Afghanistan's Karzai Arrives In Iran for Visit
SUN, FEB 24, 2002
Afghanistan's interim government head Hamid Karzai arrived in Tehran Sunday for a three-day visit to Iran, the first since he assumed the leadership after the ouster of the Afghan Taliban regime.

The visit of Karzai, who is heading a high-ranking political and economic delegation, came amid U.S. accusations that Iran is trying to interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan, which have been strongly denied by the Islamic republic.

According to an official announcement, Karzai will meet with Iranian leaders and senior officials to exchange views on regional issues, repatriation of more than 2 millions of Afghan refugees residing in Iran, political and economic cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.

Afghanistan has long suffered from civil wars. Following the defeat of the then ruling Taliban regime, anti-Taliban factions, under the coordination of the United Nations, reached an agreement and formed an interim government, paving the way for the reconstruction of the war-torn country.

Iran, a neighbor of Afghanistan with a common border of 950 kilometres, has expressed its willingness to assist the neighbor in its post-war reconstruction.

Accompanying Karzai on the visit are Afghan cabinet ministers of foreign affairs Abdullah Abdullah, immigration affairs Enayatullah Nazeri, commerce Seyyed Mustafa Kazemi, transport Sultan Hamid Hamid, information and culture Raheen Makhdoom, agriculture Sayed Hussein Anwari and rural development Abdul Malik Anwar.
