Nepal's Carpet Export Declines Deeply
THU, FEB 21, 2002
The export of woolen carpet declined by almost 24 percent during the first seven months of thecurrent fiscal year, the independent English daily The Kathmandu Post said Thursday.

The total export of the carpet was 1.03 million square meters during seven months' period while there was 1.34 million square meters in the same period of the previous fiscal year, the daily said, quoting the export statistics of Nepal.

According to the statistics, the total carpet export earnings remained at 52.70 million U.S. dollars during the period while there was 69.61 million dollars compared with the same period of last fiscal year.

In addition to the continuing decline in the export of carpet to Germany, the largest importer of Nepalese woolen carpet, the tough competition posed by the Indian carpet in the international market is also the main reason of decline in the export of Nepali carpet, the daily said.

The carpet business accounts for nearly 60 percent of Nepal's export trade. It occupied first place in Nepal's export a few years ago but was reduced to the second, to the garment industry right now.

Germany is the biggest buyer of Nepalese carpets in terms of volume while America, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, the Netherland and Britain are other major importers of Nepali carpets.
