THAI's Profit Expected to Fall by 50 Pct This Year
TUE, FEB 19, 2002
Net profit of Thai Airways International Plc. (THAI) is expected to fall by 50.43 percent this year, according to a broker firm's report available in Bangkok Tuesday.

The report released by the Securities Analysis Department of Patanasin Securities Plc., said that THAI was expected to have the net profit of 955.91 million baht (21.72 million U.S.dollars) this year, a 50.43 percent decrease from that last year.

This was due mainly to the impact by terrorists' attacks in the United States last September, it indicated, saying global economic slowdown could also contribute to the projected lower net profit.

The report said, however, that business operation and prospect of the national carrier were expected to improve next year, with its net profit projected to increase to 2.15 billion baht (49 million U.S.dollars).

In the first quarter of its 2002 fiscal year (October 1 to December 31 2001), THAI faced a net loss of 945.4 million baht (21.69 million U.S.dollars), it noted.

It was the first time in 10 years that the national carrier hada quarterly loss, it noted.
