Cuba, Canada Record Lowest Infant Death Rate in Western Hemisphere
THU, JAN 03, 2002
In the year 2001, Cuba and Canada registered the lowest infant mortality rate in the western hemisphere, with 6.2 deaths for every 1,000 births, said the Cuban Public Health Ministry Wednesday.

The rate stood at seven in the United States, said the ministry.

The annual infant mortality rate covers the deaths of minors under one-year of age.

This is the lowest rate in history of this Caribbean nation since it recorded 7.2 deaths in 2000.

Cuba is ranked fourth in the world in terms of maternal-infant protection development index, said the ministry. The index is complemented with life expectancy at birth, which is 76 in Cuba.
