R: Hi. Welcome back to Let''s Talk. Today Bill Crouger is with me, he is my husband. He is a businessman and a sports fan. And we''ve been talking about sports words and expressions, which you can use in your everyday life and also at work in business. I hope these are fun and interesting for you and they can be useful so you can understand when your foreign friends say these expressions. We''ve been talked about ''trying hard'' and we''ve been talked about ''team work'' but today we want to talk about success and failure. There are so many words for success and that''s also true in Chinese well. But maybe you''ll enjoy some of these expressions we''ve collected about failure and success from many different sports all together. What we''ll start at Bill?
B: Now let''s go back to fishing. There was the expression that "You cast out a line." or "throw out a line" like a fisherman does. Well if you''re successful that means you''ve been able to reel him in. We may say "You reeled in a big one." or "You hooked a big one." Those all mean that you''ve got a big opportunity.
R: Fishing is very popular in China. The long pole is your fishing pole or rod and this part is your reel so that''s why you reel him in.
B: There''s another set of expressions that are use if you''re having difficulty or if it''s time to quit or if someone has decided to quit.
R: You''re struggling or failing. Those are good. You need to know, that happens.
B: They come from every sports. There is one from baseball that''s "strike out". In baseball when the batter comes to the bat he has three attempts to be able to swing and miss the ball if he missed the three times then he''s out. Out of the game.
R: You''re out. And they use that.
B: That means out.
R: So it means sorry, you''ve tried three times and failed. And I do hear people say that in everyday life. I was shopping and I couldn''t bay something. I looked at three different stores and I strike out. I know there is another one from boxing called throwing the towel. That''s seems funny but you know but boxers get sweaty they wear those towels they dry off all their sweat. And when they really given up the throw down the towel into the ring. So that''s when you giving up, it''s too much for you.
B: If you haven''t ended your fight completely but you failed in a small way alone the way someone would say that "you drop the ball". That comes from rugby, soccer, and many sports where ball is involved. Well no so much soccer.
R: No soccer he wouldn''t hold the ball and dropped it. But certainly in baseball you''re trying to catch it and then you drop it. It''s terrible.
B: In rugby or football that means you''ve let down your team.
R: And that''s really bad. There''re a few more boxing terms too. You know you could be on the ropes. You know when the person has been hitting and boxing and they finally are hanging on the ropes. That means they''re barely hanging on the may not make it and they may not win. How would you use that in business?
B: Well it means that you''re in trouble. You maybe gonna loss the bid or you haven''t got the sale or your head office is gonna cut your budget. On the ropes means that you''re in trouble.
R: And it''s even worse you''re down for the count.
B: That''s right.
R: And that''s when the boxer has been hit and he''s lying down on the floor and the referee is the person who counts, right? Well they count to ten, is that right? I don''t know boxing well. Or it''s ten, nine, eight, it''s one, two three, right? And you''re down for the count and you''re down and knocked out and unless you get up...
B: Before he''s done counting. Then you''re down.
R: But you could be saved by the bell. That''s another one from boxing. "Saved by the bell." means that you''re boxing and hitting and you''re tired and you''re in trouble. But then the time period is over and you''re saved.
B: That''s one we use all the time when it''s a close call and you''ve just managed to survived the situation.
R: And that has do with the time period maybe the calendar has changed or it''s a new month, right?
B: That''s right. Now another expression from another game from billiard is "behind the eight ball". That''s when you''re really in a very difficult position. We use the expression "He''s behind the eight ball." meaning you''re standing in a sort of...
R: You''re looking at the ball with number eight, right?
B: And to get to that ball could means that you loss the game. So behind the eight ball also means that you''re in a very tough situation.
R: But you know there''s an expression "too close to call". And I think of that expression in horse racing, where the horses are so close, remembering "neck and neck", horses are crossing the line together. And it''s too close to call. You can''t tell which one is in front. And that is what they call a "photo finish". They take a photograph and they study it to see which nose was out in front, right?
B: That''s right. When it''s too close to call something the only way you know is from an instant replay.
R: Oh, you know "He is out in front." is a good one, I just thought. If "He is out in front." means he''s doing well, he is ahead of me.
B: It can also mean he''s our representative whose leading the charge, again another one for business.
R: So these sports idioms can be very useful. And I hope that they don''t confuse you but they help you, see you next time.

比如棒球中的strike out （出局）
在棒球比赛中
击球手有三次机会挥棒击球
如果三次都失误了
他就得出局（strike out）
这个手势表示出局
它意味着你失去了三次机会
在日常生活中也有人使用
比如 我想买点东西
但找不到合适的东西
走了三家商店
还是失败了（strike out）
在拳击中有个术语
throw in the towel（毛巾）
拳击手都用毛巾来擦汗
