Cao Yu

Cao yu, originally named Wan Jiabao, was born in Tianjin in September 1910. In 1922, he began to study at Nankai Middle School, and became a very active member of Nankai New Troupe. Under the guide of Prof.Zhang Pengchun, a famous drama artist, he proved his brilliant talents in drama and his performance was warmly received by the audience. In 1926, he began to study in the Department of Politics and was a key member of Nankai Drama Troupe. Before long, due to his deep love of foreign literature and his dedication to the cause of drama, he left Nanjai University and went to study in the Department of Western Literature in Qinghua University. In 1933, he finished his maiden play The Thunder Storm, which he had been conceiving at Nankai University and wrote at Qinghua University. He was one of the forerunners of Chinese drama. After he left Nankai University, Cao Yu always kept in mind his Alma Mater. In 1946, he was present at Zhang Boling's seventieth birthday party in the United States and composed a poem with Lao She to celebrate the anniversary. In his last years, he came back to Nankai University and said with deep feeling that " The education I received at Nankai University will be always on my mind."
