The curtain was raised on the National Peking Opera Theatre's 2004 spring season on Feb.23. Despite spring usually being considered the off-season, the renowned artists took to the stage at the Grand Chang'an theater.

New acts and old classics are always a feature at these performances. The first night saw the collaboration of three rising stars, Huang Binqiang, Wei Jijun and Deng Ming. Their performance earned waves of applause from the audience. Concerns were raised at the show regarding it being staged this early in the season.

National Peking Opera Theatre of China's Spring season performance will continue for the next three months. Love and hate, happiness and sorrow, triumph and defeat, will all feature in the productions. Audience will be offered a cup of mixed wine in over 50 celebrated operas, including "The Women Warriors of the Yang Family" and "Chinese Princess Turandot".
