Chinese Opera Gala ready for Spring Festival

    On the eve of every Spring Festival, millions of Chinese people are glued to their TV sets for the annual exhilarating "night at the opera". And their traditional fun for this year is ensured. China Central Television wrapped up the recording for the 2004 Spring Festival Chinese Opera Gala early on the morning of Jan.14.

    As with every year that national treasure, Peking Opera, still provides the staple of the over 40 classic arias to be presented at the 2004 Spring Festival Chinese Opera Gala. The millions of opera buffs across the country will be able to see top-notch renditions of the centuries-old art form, which embraces a combination of singing, dancing, acrobatics, calligraphy and martial arts. There are stellar performances from professionals, but some top amateurs also strut their stuff at the gala.

    Joining the Peking Opera performers are also established artists of 11 folk operas loved by people from different parts of the country. Some of these are included in the gala for the first time.

    The Chinese Opera Gala has been broadcast on the eve of the Chinese New Year every year for the past decade. It has become the favorite show for the millions fans of traditional Chinese opera. It will beam out on the small screen next the night of Jan.21.
