Hong Kong fashion rides the crest of a wave
   CCTV.COM   2004-01-15 10:01:07

As part of the annual fashion fair called "World Boutique", Hong Kong Fall/Winter 2004 Fashion Week kicked off with a parade by more than 40 local designers at a show called "Water World." The brief for the designers was to create clothes in varied shades of blue and green, symbolizing Hong Kong and southern China's maritime heritage.

The Hong Kong designers' 'Water World' show included new designs by well-known names like William Tang, Ruby Li, Ranee K, and Spy Henry Lau, as well as the latest creations from young designers like Connie Wong, Dorothy Lam, and Mo Kwok Wah.

Veteran Hong Kong designer William Tang said the ocean-themed show provided a creative stimulus for the local design community. His new line will also be on display this week in a solo show.

Examples from the collections show the variety of styles in Hong Kong, which has a strong local couture market for the wealthy, conservative business types, as well as an up-and-coming, more stylish edge, which rivals even Japan in setting trends for Asia's fashion followers.

Hong Kong Fashion Week continues until Jan.16, with shows featuring designers from all over Asia, including South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, India and the Taiwan region.
