Viewers spoilt for choice in New Year TV land

The Spring Festival Gala is traditionally the main dish on the eve of the Chinese lunar New Year. But if you have to be elsewhere on that particular night or still want more, the Spring Festival TV Gala produced by China's Ministry of Culture is the answer. The Gala goes to air on New Year's day and promises more TV revelry.

The producers of the show have come up with some auspicious changes. This year the show leaps from the confines of the stage and makes the most of the gymnasium at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The gym's generous proportions makes multi-perspective shots possible. Designed to be crowd-pleaser, the gala blends high-brow programs with more broad-based fare. Modern elements are also incorporated into some traditional genres. The gala will go on air on Jan.22 on CCTV-I.
