 In the third year of the Republic of China, the Confucian Temple in Beijing suddenly attracted many worshippers. The collapse of the Qing Empire caused a spiritual vacuum. As the Foremost Teacher of emperors during the feudal dynasties, Confucius became the spiritual sustenance of many people.

 In those days, Anqing was an important city along the Yangtze River. It was here that Chen Duxiu spent his days of early youth. Like other traditional intellectuals, Chen Duxiu received elementary education from the Four Books and the Five Classics.

Beijing University

 The snow fell in thick flakes on January 4, 1917 when Cai Yuanpei came to Beijing University as its new president. Many veteran workers on the campus remembered clearly how Cai Yuanpei came to the university. When they bowed to the new president, Cai Yuanpei took off his hat and returned a bow to the workers in a serious manner.

Revolution in Literature

 Written in the vernacular, this poem was published in the magazine “New Youth” on February 1, 1917. Such a simple poem seems to be very naive today, but it was of revolutionary significance more than 80 years ago. The author was Hu Shi, a young Chinese student studying in the United States.

Illusive Victory

 The final phase of World War I came in the winter of 1918. The four－year－long war would thoroughly change the history of the whole world. On November 11, 1918, the war came to an end with the victory of the Entente countries. When the news was brought to China, people described the victory as the “Triumph of Justice”. After all, the Chinese people had contributed to the victory with their blood and sweat.
