 This week, CCTV One starts to air its multi－million RMB, 38－part series, "A Family of Books". The massive production presents a vivid panoramic view of the life and work of China's intellectuals in the 1980's.
Shot by a veteran film director and packed with a sparkling array of China's top－notch actors －－ the TV series "A Family of Books" revolves around a family of intellectuals in the 1980's, a decade of fast－change in the wake of the catastrophe of the "Cultural Revolution."
It is a story about the love and hate, ups and downs of a college professor and his family, friends and colleagues as China is plunges headlong into the reform and opening－up program of the era.
The twenty plus main cast play out the clashes, both in lifestyle and in values, between two generations of Chinese intellectuals. The production also provides a perspective on the progress China made through the academic split between an old economist and his younger successor.
The 38－part drama started on Monday night on prime time CCTV－1 and will run for the next couple of weeks.
