Chinese people love festival and there are many festivities. The Mid-Autumn Festival, or the Moon Festival is one of the most popular and traditional ones. The round shape to a Chinese person symbolises family reunion. Therefore the Moon Festival means family reunion. On this day, the family will get together wherever it is possible to eat moon cakes and to appreciate the full moon. Sometimes people who have already settled overseas will come back to visit their parents on that day. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, September 21st was the Moon Festival this year. In Chinese fairy tales, there lives on the moon the fairy Chang E, a wood cutter named Wu Gang and a jade rabbit which is Chang E's pet. In the old days, people paid respect to the festival to celebrate the completion of the harvest. Every Chinese holiday is accompanied by some sort of special food. On the Moon Festival, people eat moon cakes.

To celebrate the festival, CCTV international prepared a special gala performance that was held in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Guilin, a city named after its lovely osmanthus, is hailed by many as being the most beautiful place in China. An old Chinese saying goes "Guilin overshadows all other cities of China for scenery". Our stage was set up right beside the famous Lijiang River in Guilin and surrounded by its beautiful scenery.

The performance attracted many artists from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Macao. The performance featured dances, songs, acrobatics and even Gui Opera. On November 9th and 10th, Center Stage will show you the highlights of the gala performance.
