Japan's main opposition leader Ichiro Ozawa has announced his resignation as president of the Democratic Party of Japan.

Ozawa's top secretary was indicted in a political funds scandal, threatening the Party's prospects in the next general election. Before the scandal unfolded, public opinion polls showed Ozawa to be a strong contender for Prime Minister.
