MADRID, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Spain's Health and Social Policy Minister Trinidad Jimenez reported on Monday the first confirmed case of swine flu in the country, which is also the first case of human infection in Europe.

The Spanish health ministry identified the patient as a 23-year-old male, who was in Mexico for a study trip and returned to Spain on April 22.

The European Union (EU) said that the case in Spain should raise the global alert.

According to Spanish authorities, 19 other people in the country are being tested to determine whether they have been infected with swine flu. There was also a suspected case reported in Algeciras city, southwest Spain.
