The crew of the 3-11 includes 58 sailors, fishery administration staff and journalists. They arrived at the major island of Yongxing on Tuesday. Local fishermen say the ship will provide more powerful protection for their interests and safety.

The 46-hundred ton ship is the fastest one of the South China Sea Fisheries Bureau, with a top speed of 22 knots. It's equipped with a Global Maritime Distress Safety System, and can sail non-stop for 8,000 sea miles.

The bureau plans to expand its fleet over the next three to five years to fight the rising illegal fishing in the area.
