Special Report:   China-Japan-ROK Summit

China, Japan and South Korea have now met for nine tripartite gatherings since they began in 1999. Previously, they were all held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Plus Three summits and, as we said, Saturday was the first time the three-way meeting took place as a stand alone event.

The first meeting brought together leaders from China, Japan, and South Korea for an informal breakfast in 1999 in Manila. The leaders focused on their domestic economic situations and the situation in the region.

The second meeting was held in 2000 in Singapore. The leaders exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between the three countries and with ASEAN.

In 2001, leaders held their third meeting in Brunei exchanging views on boosting both economic and trade cooperation.

In 2002, the leaders held their fourth trilateral meeting in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh.

The fifth meeting was held in 2003 in Bali, Indonesia. Cooperation and other issues of common concern were discussed. A Joint Declaration on the Promotion of Tripartite Cooperation was also signed.

The sixth meeting was held in 2004 in Laos. The leaders adopted an Action Strategy on Trilateral Cooperation, and issued a report on progress in cooperation.

Cebu, in the Philippines, hosted the 7th meeting in January, 2007. Views on promoting political trust and mutually beneficial cooperation were considered. The leaders also committed to peacefully resolve the DPRK nuclear issue.

In November, 2007, the leaders attended an 8th meeting held in Singapore, agreeing to further promote trilateral cooperation.

The leaders agree to promote further trilateral cooperation.
