A Russian cosmonaut at the space station has used a joystick to manually dock a cargo ship. The last minute change on Sunday was the result of problems with the automated docking procedure system.

The craft delivered 2.5 tons of fuel, oxygen, water and equipment. It also brought Christmas gifts for the Russian cosmonaut and his two American crew mates. The docking was the first for a new model of Russia's long-serving Progress line of cargo ships.

But there were problems in the final stages of docking, including the loss of frequency information and unexpected toggling of the automatic system's tracking displays.
