Iran is blaming the US for triggering the global financial meltdown.

Iran's Foreign Minister made the charge on Thursday, on the sidelines of the 7th Asia Cooperation Dialogue meeting in the Kazakh capital of Astana.

Manouchehr Mottaki said it is time for the world to set up a fair -- and truly international -- financial system, one that can curb the impact of the US economy on world finances.

Iranian officials have maintained that their country would survive the global crisis better than many others, because its economy had become more independent since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Many experts disagree with this assessment, however, saying that Tehran cannot stay immune from a world economic downturn, if only because of its reliance on oil revenues to fund its budget.
