French FM confirms Russian withdrawal from South Ossetia

French Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, has confirmed that Russia has met Friday's deadline to withdraw from strips of land along the Georgian breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Kouchner also visited European Union monitors who are patrolling  territory surrounding South Ossetia.

Kouchner visited damaged Georgian villages near separatist South Ossetia, a show of European support for the pro-Western nation following its war with Moscow.

The Russian pullout from that territory fulfills one of the terms of a cease-fire agreement negotiated by French President, Nicolas Sarkozy. EU monitoring teams were deployed to Georgia earlier in October to oversee the Russian withdrawal.
