UN general assembly session opens

The 63rd annual session of the UN General Assembly has opened at the UN Headquarters in New York. The 192-member bloc will discuss issues ranging from the global food crisis to climate change.

Incoming General Assembly President, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, said various major crises including economic, financial, environmental, humanitarian and legal, are converging in the world food crisis.

The sessions will deal with the role of international financial institutions, the revitalization of the assembly and the reform of the Security Council. Water, terrorism and human rights, nuclear control and disarmament, human trafficking, the Palestinian situation, humanitarian assistance and gender equality are also among themes that the assembly will discuss.
