Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has asked EU leaders to support the territorial integrity and unity of his country. He made the plea on Sunday, the eve of an emergency European Union summit.

Mikhail Saakashvili said, "I expect that Europe will unanimously support the territorial unity and integrity of our country. And will declare that it will never justify the results of the past lawlessness. It is clear and I have told everyone, that we Georgians will never tolerate these injustices. And I also expect that the strong movement in support of Georgia's freedom will start."

EU officials say the bloc's leaders will likely opt for diplomatic pressure to isolate Russia. But Russia has angrily warned Europe NOT to do America's bidding. Moscow also says it does not fear Western sanctions, and has given no indication of softening its stance.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said, "Our position will not change. We have made our decision, it is irreversible. Our duty is to secure peace and security in the region. That is where we stand."
