S.Korea steps up defense of disputed islets

South Korea is stepping up its defense of islands it claims as its territory, while sending a stern message to Japan.

South Korea vowed to repel any Japanese claim to the remote disputed islands in the East Sea.

South Korea's coast guard has stepped up patrols near the islands to fortify defenses, after Japan referred to the islands as Japanese territory.

Gwak Young-Hwan, the Captain of S. Korean Coast Guard said that, "South Koreans do not have to worry and can relax. As long as South Korea's coast guard is here, we will protect the islands with all our means and do our best to guard maritime sovereignty."
