McCain picks Palin as running mate

US Republican Presidential candidate John McCain has named Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate.

The announcement came one day after McCain's Democratic rival, Barack Obama, accepted his party's presidential nomination. 44-year-old Palin is considered to be a right-wing Republican and social conservative. She is also very popular among young people within her state. Analysts say McCain's choice of Palin is intended to shorten his age gap with the much younger Obama, and also aims to attract women voters.
