No one would dispute Australia is a major sports power in the world, with their medal haul so far at the Beijing Games. But Australia's pole vault victory on Friday night was the country's first athletics gold medal for a male athlete since 1968.

The pole vault champion from Australia attributed his success to the fact that he took three attempts to clear the bar.

Steve Hooker, Australian Pole Vault champion said, "I think in the end it was good that I was doing third attempt jumps because I just knocked all that nervous energy out of myself and just started doing what I needed to do to get through the jumps."
