US President George W. Bush has lifted a ban on offshore drilling.

GOP Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker are backing US''s President Bush''s call to life the ban on offshore oil exploration.(Bloomberg)

Bush says that he is trying to ease market tensions and boost the oil supply. Last month he asked Congress to lift its prohibition before he did so himself. Congressional Democrats have opposed lifting the prohibition that has barred energy companies from waters along both the East and West coasts and in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

In his final months of office, Bush is looking at increasing oil exploration amid record gas prices.
