Tropical storm Fengshen continues to weaken on its way north and further inland. The storm brought heavy rains and strong winds to China's southern coast on Wednesday after tearing through the Philippines last weekend. So far, no casualties have been reported in China.

Fengshen pounded the coastal city of Shenzhen Wednesday morning.

Fengshen pounded the coastal city of Shenzhen Wednesday morning.

Meaning "wind god" in Chinese, Fengshen brought heavy rains to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Guangdong province.

14 cities and counties of Guangdong issued a rain storm warning despite Fengshen weakening Wednesday evening.

Schools were closed, vessels stayed in harbors and planes were grounded.

Water has been drained from dams and lakes in the Pearl Delta Region, one of the country's major manufacturing bases.

Meteorologists expect the storm to move north and continue to weaken, but it will still bring heavy rains to the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi and Hunan as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

In Hunan, Anhui and Jiangxi, some lakes and rivers have been near bursting point since the start of the rainy season, and the fresh rainfall is adding pressure.

Those areas are keeping on alert against possible flooding and other geological disasters.
