1400 wild pandas are estimated to be living in Sichuan, close to 90 percent of the country's total. So far, a 9-year-old female giant panda living at the Wolong Nature Reserve has been confirmed dead as a result of the May 12 earthquake. Another panda is still missing.

Studies are being conducted to determine plans to rebuild Wolong's Conservation and Research Center. The center is the biggest breeding base for the panda in China.
