6.1 earthquake shakes Iceland

A powerful earthquake has rocked Iceland, shaking buildings in the capital Reykjavik and injuring more than a dozen people. It has also forced residents in outlying towns to evacuate.

The US Geological Survey says the 6.1 magnitude quake hit at 3:46 pm local time, with its epicenter near the town of Selfoss, just south of Reykjavik. Iceland's national broadcaster says the number of injured could reach 30, but none of the injuries are serious.
Aftershocks could be felt in the country's southwest. Police have been advising nearby residents to stay outdoors.
