Yao Ming concerns about quake-hit Sichuan

Special Report:   Strong quake jolts SW China

The focus of attention of Chinese all over the world are on Sichuan ever since the earthquake took place. Though he's in the United States, basketball star Yao Ming has been doing his best to try to help.

Yao Ming learnt of the news of the earthquake through a cellphone message on the morning of May 12th in the States. In the days that followed, he kept his ear on the latest news from Sichuan through newspapers, TV and the Internet.

Yao Ming said, "I feel sadder and sadder seeing the casualty numbers climbing. But often I didn't know what the figures meant. When the death toll reached 19 thousand, the figure suddenly became clear as I walked into my training stadium. The stadium can hold some 19 people. I looked around and realized so many people lost their lives in the quake."

Yao Ming has donated two million yuan to help the quake victims, but said he wanted to do more as people in the disaster zone still faced enormous challenges ahead. He has just released advertisements in both Chinese and English, calling on more people around world to offer a helping hand.

Yao Ming said, "My colleagues have been very concerned, always asking me about the quake. My boss called on people around him to donate. Even a caddie asked me where he should go to donate."

Yao also said after pulling through all these calamities China would finally see the rainbow ---- the Olympics.
