Rescue operation in full swing in Dujiangyan, Beichuan

Rescue operation is in full swing in Dujiangyan city and Beichuan county, two of the worst-hit areas in Sichuan province. Rescuers are making all-out efforts to save people's lives.

This is Juyuan Middle School in Dujiangyan city. The whole building collapsed during the quake. Some 1200 students and teachers were caught in the collapse. About 300 were still trapped under debris before a 1000-strong rescue team arrived. Thanks to the use of life detector systems, the rescuers were able to find a number of survivors. They struggled to drill a hole in the debris, so that the survivors could get out.

Qu Guosheng, Chief of State Seismological Bureau Rescue Team said "We've found survivors at two points under the debris. We're seeking ways to get these survivors out. It's very hard because they are trapped in tiny spaces."

This is Beichuan Middle School in Beichuan county. The school was totally destroyed. Over 30 people so far have been rescued by local residents. But the rescue operation here is facing great difficulties. The first rescue team arrived in the area by foot.

Heavy rescue machines were not able to reach the area immediately, because the road leading to the county was blocked by huge debris. But rescuers say they will leave no man behind.
