The Olympic flame is scheduled to visit the Fujian Province coastal city of Xiamen this afternoon.

Xiamen is on the Taiwan Strait and borders Quanzhou to the north. It was named China's most livable city last year.

Because it's shaped like an egret, Xiamen is called "island of egrets". It is famous for being an ancestral home to overseas Chinese.

As one of China's first special economic zones in the 1980s, Xiamen is a favorite destination for foreign investors. Last year's volume of imports and exports hit nearly 40 billion US dollars.

The city is also well-known for sports. The Xiamen International Marathon Games, first held in 2003, has become one of China's famous sports events.
