China, WHO cooperate to combat EV71 virus

China is working with the World Health Organization to combat hand, foot and mouth disease, which has killed 34 children in China.

The Ministry of Health and the WHO held a joint news conference on Wednesday to report the latest attempts to prevent and control the disease. A WHO official confirmed China's positive role in fighting the disease, and said the WHO will keep in close contact with China to provide technical support.

The disease has centered around the city of Fuyang in Anhui province in eastern China, where the first case occurred in March. Other provinces have since had occurrences of the disease.

Scientists say there has been no evidence of mutation of the EV71 virus, the most deadly virus connected to the disease.
