Myanmar State television reported the deaths from Cyclone Nargis rose to over 28,000 from about 23,000 by Sunday evening.

40 townships in Yangon division and seven townships in Ayeyawaddy division remain on disaster status. Relief and recovery work are under way.

Meanwhile, international relief materials continue to flow in.

A jumbo jet brought China's third shipment, nearly 60 tons of supplies, including tents and water purifiers. China has promised aid worth 5.3 million US dollars to survivors.

Also on Sunday, Myanmar received first aid kits, medicine, plastic sheeting and blankets from Thailand, the International Committee for the Red Cross, Greece, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Petronas of Malaysia and Pakistan.

The Myanmar government has agreed to a US shipment of aid, scheduled to arrive on Monday.

Myanmar says the best way to help is to send material rather than personnel. The government clarified it's not yet ready to receive search and rescue teams or media staff.
