The 71-year old conservative announced his cabinet list after meeting with the head of state at the presidential palace. The government will be sworn in on Thursday and will then face a vote of confidence. But their approval is widely expected in parliament, since it is safely controlled by Berlusconi's conservative forces.

Giulio Tremonti will return as economy minister and Franco Frattini will leave his post as European commissioner to become foreign minister. Roberto Maroni of the Northern League will be Italy's new interior minister.
