In Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega has hosted a regional summit to discuss emergency food and security issues affecting Latin American and Caribbean countries.
The summit held in Nicaragua's capital Managua is aimed at working out how each country will contribute to guaranteeing food supply to the region. Ortega says the region needs to finance farming, ensure basic food supplies and form a production and marketing alliance to promote local farm goods.
Ortega says a rise in food prices has stopped progress for countries in the region. Central American farmers depend on imported oil, fertilizers and seeds to operate, but globally food prices have risen 40 per cent since mid-2007.
