Police in northern Brazil have arrested a rice farmer on suspicion of attempted murder. Ten people were injured in the conflict between the farmer and indigenous settlers.
The incident happened when the farmer's guards opened fire on a group of Indians trying to build homes on land he claims he owns. Police say Paulo Cesar Quartiero, who is also the mayor of the remote town of Pacaraima, is also suspected of conspiracy and illegally possessing weapons and explosives.
Quartiero said his men fired in self-defense. The Brazilian government has sent the Justice Minister and police to stop the conflict.
