In Pakistan, a suicide bomber has attacked a police checkpoint in the country's northwest garrison town of Bannu, killing three people and testing the new government's fledgling peace process.

The suicide attacker rode up to the checkpoint on Tuesday. He detonated his explosives when officers signaled for him to stop. The army said at least two civilians and one policeman were killed, and four of their officers were wounded. No-one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Bannu is a hub for tens of thousands of Pakistani troops deployed in the border region as part of the US-led war against terrorism. The troops have been observing an almost complete cease-fire alongside Taliban and al-Qaida militants since the new Pakistani government took office five weeks ago.
