The festival is one of the most magnificent displays of tulips in the world today. Within two weeks, millions of tulips form a vast sea of blossoms, welcoming visitors from around the globe. And Ottawa is thus honored the "Tulip Capital" of North America.
During World War II, the Netherlands royal family fled to exile in Canada. Princess Margriet was born in an Ottawa hospital in 1943. Thousands of Canadian soldiers died in the campaign to liberate the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. After the war, tulip seeds were sent to Canada every year to commemorate the assistance given to the Netherlands. Half a century has passed and tulips have remained a symbol of friendship and multi-culturalism.
