Typhoon Neoguri has now weakened. But mud flows and strong winds this weekend killed three people in south China's Guangdong Province.
The typhoon hit Guangdong province Saturday after landing in the island province of Hainan on Friday. Two deaths occurred in the city of Shenzhen, when a mud flow flooded a section of road under construction. A third person was killed when a section of sheet metal was blown off a stadium roof by strong gales.
The nearby provinces of Hunan, Hubei and Fujian also experienced heavy rain and hailstorms.
Although the typhoon has weakened into a low pressure storm, Guangdong provincial flood-control authorities say the risk of mountain flooding and landslides is still high.
Meanwhile, several Chinese and Vietnamese fishing boats were hit by the typhoon off the coast of Hainan province. 18 Chinese and 22 Vietnamese fishermen are still missing.
Deng Shuhong, official of Shouth China Sea Maritime Rescue Bureau, said, "A total of 62 Chinese fishermen were caught in the typhoon. Among those who fell into the water, we rescued 18. Another 18 are still missing. Meanwhile, one Vietnamese fishing boat ran aground during the typhoon. But all 82 people on board were safe. "
Monday was the fourth day since the fishermen went missing, and a 24-hour search operation is still under way. Rescue boats and search helicopters are participating in the effort.
