Russia's ruling party says it will ask President Vladimir Putin to become its chairman at its party congress.

Putin said he will serve as the country's Prime Minister once his protege Dmitry Medvedev is sworn in as President on May the 7th.

The chairman's job of the United Russia Party will free Putin from day-to-day management duties. The Kremlin has given no indication whether Putin will take a role in the party's leadership.

Putin is expected to attend the second day of the congress. The pro-Kremlin party won a majority in last December's elections in the State Duma.

Putin is the country's most popular politician after presiding over Russia's longest economic boom.
