GMS leaders reaffirm guiding principles of cooperation

VIENTIANE, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Leaders attending the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Summit reaffirmed here on Monday the guiding principles of cooperation that stresses the importance of a pragmatic, action-oriented, and results-focused approach to the preparation and implementation of subregional projects.

In the Joint Summit Declaration signed here on Monday, leaders of the six GMS countries which include Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, recognized that while challenges to GMS development remain, the region's progress in cooperation is also opening up unprecedented opportunities.

They also agreed that it will be imperative to sustain and deepen the six GMS member nations to sustain and deepen their economic cooperation and integration efforts so as to meet these challenges and take full advantage of the opportunities for GMS development.

Leaders of the six countries gathered here for their third summit meeting scheduled for March 30-31 to discuss ways to deepen economic cooperation for their countries' shared prosperity

The six countries in 1992 kicked off their GMS Program which involves planning and implementing sub-regional projects in nine areas: transport, energy, telecommunications, tourism, environment, human resource development, agriculture, trade facilitation, and private investment.
