Canada's annual seal hunt is to start on Friday. This year hunters will be allowed to kill 275 thousand young harp seals on the ice floes off Canada's northeast coast.

The Canadian government has been criticized by animal rights activists who say that these numbers are totally unsustainable and killing are done in an inhumane way. (CCTV.com)

The quota is slightly more than last year's 270 thousand but considerably below 335 thousand set in 2006.
